“The Department of Highways is accelerating the restoration of the main road surface on Rama 2 Road, kilometers 29 to 32, to accommodate inbound traffic to Bangkok, starting today at 8:00 AM. Traffic management on the outbound side is also being expedited to alleviate afternoon congestion after the area affected by the LG crane collapse has been cleared.”
Mr. Piyapong Chiwatnakulpaishal, Director-General of the Department of Highways, revealed measures to alleviate traffic problems on Rama 2 Road (Highway No. 35) to accommodate the demolition work of the bridge damaged by the LG crane collapse and the urgent concrete pouring work for connecting the cantilever bridge beams, stating that the Department of Highways is aware of the inconvenience to road users after the LG crane collapse, which necessitated the closure of the main traffic lanes between kilometers 29 and 32 for 24 hours since January 15, 2026. Currently, the incident area has been cleared, but it is still necessary to close some construction areas for safety. Therefore, a site visit and meeting with stakeholders were held to assess the feasibility of adding traffic lanes to alleviate traffic congestion on Rama 2 Road. A proactive traffic management plan has also been ordered to be implemented to ensure smoother traffic flow.
He assigned... Highway Office 13 (Bangkok) and Samut Sakhon Highway District are coordinating with contractors to expedite the opening of one lane each on the main road between kilometer markers 29 and 32, in both inbound and outbound directions, to help alleviate traffic congestion during critical periods, as follows:
• Inbound direction (heading towards Bangkok): One main lane will be opened for public use from 8:00 AM today (January 26, 2026) onwards.
• Outbound direction (heading towards Samut Songkhram): A reversible lane will be created on the main road to allow outbound vehicles to safely pass through the work area and redirect back to the normal route before crossing the Tha Chin River bridge, which is currently undergoing detour improvements. This lane will be open for use from 4:00 PM today (January 26, 2026) onwards.
Please note that the opening of these main road lanes will only be carried out during daytime hours. During nighttime hours, from 8:00 PM to 5:30 AM, all main road lanes will be closed, and road users are requested to divert to the frontage roads to ensure maximum safety and adherence to the bridge demolition and concrete pouring operations.
In addition, the Department of Highways has improved the entry and exit points between the main and frontage roads to improve traffic flow and prevent bottlenecks. The public can still use the frontage roads as usual. Highway police and traffic volunteers will be stationed at these points 24 hours a day to provide assistance and ensure smooth traffic flow in case of accidents. Due to the partial closure of areas for maximum safety during the work, traffic may be heavier than usual. Therefore, we request the cooperation of the public to allow extra travel time or avoid the route during peak hours.
The Department of Highways affirms that public safety is paramount, coupled with efficient traffic management. For route inquiries or to report problems, please call the Department of Highways hotline at 1586 (free, 24 hours).
